Dear Milton Students and Parents:

I would like to share with you an exciting opportunity that we are offering students for the 2020-2021 school year. During the week of January 18th, 2021, Milton teachers will lead a group of Milton students for a hands-on study visit to our nation’s capital.

For the past several years (with a small recent gap) each January, Milton participates in a trip run by the Close-Up Foundation. This innovative educational program is the nation’s leading nonprofit, nonpartisan civic education organization. Since 1972, Close Up has brought over 665,000 students and teachers from across the country to Washington, D.C. to experience firsthand the history, politics, and culture of the nation’s capital. While on the program, students will participate in a variety of hands-on activities such as small group workshops, seminars with Washington, D.C. journalists, lobbyists, and embassy officials, and meetings with members of Congress and their staffs. Furthermore, students will learn from and debate with their peers from across the country, exposing them to differing attitudes and perspectives. Recently, the University of Virginia validated the program’s curriculum, giving students the opportunity to earn college credit for their participation.

Our trip this year is scheduled for January 17 – January 23, 2021. This week-long program gives students the opportunity to experience their government in action and gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to be informed, engaged citizens. The students will miss school days that are considered excused absences. As far as make-up work, students are encouraged to let their teachers know in advance that they will be missing a week of school, and to see if any assignments can be done ahead of time or issued before leaving. Students are ultimately responsible for making up all missed work.

The all-inclusive program cost for each student this year is $2,624, and includes instruction, airfare & travel, expenses, meals, and lodging. Any Junior or Senior who is interested in government, history, current issues, or politics is welcome and encouraged to attend. All payments are made online and can be made in any increment at any time prior to the trip. An initial $600 deposit is required to reserve the student’s spot on the trip. The deposit is due by 6/1/20 and is non-refundable.

We will be holding an informational meeting on Thursday, January 23rd at 6:30pm in room 4308 at Milton High School; where we can go over the trip in more detail and address questions.

Please feel free to contact either Elizabeth Alfano (AlfanoE@fultonschools.org) or David Lakin (Lakin1@fultonschools.org). We hope your student will be able to be a part of this exciting opportunity!

Sincerely,

Milton Close Up
